National Adoption Month (part 2)

Positive adoption language helps to clear up misconceptions about adoption. By using positive adoption language, the hope is that people would be better educated about adoption. Below are just a few terms that are commonly used...spreading misconceptions about adoption.

Just like in all aspects of life, no one says everything perfectly and chances are that when you talk about adoption you may not know exactly the right things to say. But, for me, it means a lot that you are willing to have a conversation about adoption. Through conversations we are able to learn more about adoption, dispel some of the myths and fears surrounding adoption, and hopefully begin to change a world where some boys and girls have no mommy or daddy.

Positive Adoption Language:
Birthparent (positive) versus Real parent (negative)
Biological parent (positive) versus Natural parent (negative)
Birth child (positive) versus Own child (negative)
My child (positive) versus Adopted child; own child (negative)
Terminate parental rights (positive) versus Give up (negative)
To parent (positive) versus To keep (negative)
